Put Me In Coach: What Is Coaching?

Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.

Pete Carroll

I discovered life coaching last summer while looking for ways to monetize my business that I would feel good about. Of course, I had heard of it before, but I didn’t know what it entailed and I didn’t realize how vast the field really is. Honestly, I didn’t have a very favorable opinion, as a whole.

I chalked it up to a lot of toxic positivity, ableism, and Pollyanna thinking. To be sure, there is a lot of that in the industry. Even during my training, I was sometimes taken about by the ableism and toxic positivity, but I was determined to find a way of guiding my clients that left all of that behind.

Life Coaching

Life coaching is a creative partnership between a coach and a client in which the coach supports and helps clients to find their own answers and solutions. They do not solve problems, give advice, or tell their clients what to do. They will work in tandem to achieve goals and change the client’s life for the better.

A coach:

  • helps the client to learn and grow
  • helps them to change and move in the direction they want to be going
  • supports the client at every level
  • builds awareness, empowers choice, and leads to change
  • helps to unlock client’s personal potential

Life coaching, though, is more of an umbrella term. It’s like movies or music. There are a million different niches to serve. Here are several different types of coaching:

  • Life
  • Business
  • ADHD
  • Relationship
  • Wellness
  • Group
  • Success
  • Confidence
  • Happiness
  • Mental Health
  • Inspirational
  • Self-love
  • Empowerment
  • Skills
  • Spiritual

This is only a small list of life coaching niches. As you can see, coaching can cover a vast array of subjects and topics. Every coach will have a different style and approach, depending on their genre or their personal approach.

Mindset Empowerment Coaching

When starting my coaching practice and trying to figure out my niche, I knew only one thing. I wanted to empower people with ADHD and people who are in mental health recovery. I want to help them learn to love themselves radically, to heal themselves, and to reach their full potential. Finding purpose in life changed everything for me and I want to help others do the same.

This is when I discovered mindset and empowerment coaching. Mindset coaching helps people change their thought patterns and beliefs. It helps the client gain awareness, create accountability, increase motivation, set realistic goals, and engage in self-reflection.

It seeks to root out negative thought processes and behaviors and replace them with healthier thoughts and behaviors. It identifies where a person is currently, where they want to be, and how to get there.

Similarly, empowerment coaching focuses mainly on your inner thoughts. An empowerment coach helps a client to feel strong and confident enough to go after what they want and to access their innate inner power to make changes in their lives. It reminds clients that they are in control of their situation and their options.

Empowerment coaching will:

  • nurture your self-confidence
  • access your inner power
  • transform yourself and you life
  • create a fulfilling life guided by your infinite personal power

Together, coach and client work together to set and achieve goals, celebrate wins, and build confidence. It allows people to shift their lives through courage, strength, and self-love.

My Niche

Coming up with a niche is hard. It’s something that I’ve agonized about. Obviously, I want to help everyone. That said, in trying to help everyone, I would end up helping no one. So, that brings me back around to my community.

From now on, I will be helping people with ADHD to find the personal power that is so often stolen from us at an early age. I will also help people who are feeling stuck in mental health recovery to find purpose and passion in their every day lives, as well as learning to forgive and love themselves.

I will introduce radical self-love and self-acceptance to every person that comes to me for help. Together we will work on goals and we will kick out “the boardroom” that says, “You aren’t good enough. Don’t try, there’s no point. You’ll never get there.” Because you can get there. Together, we can achieve greatness.

There will be no tough love. I’m not going to be mean to you or drop you as a client. I won’t engage in toxic positivity because I believe that it’s okay and very normal to feel bad sometimes. I’ll be there for you when you do to work through it and get to the root of the problem. Lastly, there will be ABSOLUTELY ZERO ableism in my practice. We all have different abilities, mental blocks, and tolerances. My clients are always in control of every session and clients choose what they do to move themselves forward. I don’t force homework; some people stay away from coaching just for that very reason.

This might be on of the shortest posts I’ve ever written for The Winter Of My Discontent, but I wanted to take a quick moment to help you understand coaching a little better. It’s a slightly misunderstood profession, but a noble one when you’re doing it right.

I hope this helps you better understand what life coaching is, particularly mindset empowerment coaching, and what I am trying to build here at The Winter Of My Discontent. Thank you for being here with me on this adventure.
